And with those three words, the reality of my life came crashing down on me…
I had done everything that I thought I was supposed to do, and now all I could see was the huge gap between where I was and where I wanted to be.
I felt embarrassed, hopelessly frustrated, and had no idea of what to do next.
But let me back up…
I still remember moving back into my old bedroom at my parents house after graduating college because I couldn’t find a job to financially support myself.
My best friend was helping me, and as he picked up a large heavy popcorn tin I had used to keep spare change for years asked, “What is this?”
I replied without thinking, “That’s my rainy day fund.”
He paused, giving me that weird look that only someone who knows you so well can do, and said, “Dude, it’s pouring.”
That’s when I was finally forced to accept that what I was doing wasn’t working, and that if I wanted real change in my life, I was going to have to do something different.
I decided to stop listening to everyone’s well meaning advice, ignore everything I thought I was “supposed to do”, and instead went deep inside myself, and laid it all on line.
I realized that I could either continue struggling, trying to figure what to do and how to make it happen to get what I wanted…
Or…
I could follow my heart and my inner guidance and claim my life as my own, no matter what happened.
A couple months and a few twists and turns later, I landed my first professional job (and an amazing adventure) as a biologist onboard commercial fishing vessels in the Bering Sea for the National Marine Fisheries Service.
If you find yourself ready for real and permanent change in your life, you need look no further than your own inner guidance.
I can guarantee that every time you listen to your intuition, or “gut feeling”, you are happy that you did.
And every time you don’t listen, well….. you know the rest.
So, since you have guidance that is always 100% correct, why would you ever NOT listen to it?
Because you can’t always come with a good reason to explain or justify WHY you feel the way you do.
And most people are so trained to think their way through life, that when their mind and their feelings are in conflict, they default to what they think they should do.
But if you are willing to trust how you feel, even when it doesn’t make sense, you will always find your path to every solution that feels good to you.
And your inner guidance has a much better track record than your mind.
Just saying….
It’s your choice.
